Meg Plaster, Churchill Fellow

The View From Here
I was honoured to be awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2022, to explore other countries’ experiences with assisted dying and learn how they build, support and sustain the important health professionals who work in this space. On my itinerary – Belgium, The Netherlands, Canada, US and New Zealand. Follow my journey as I explore the view from here.

Hello
I am a Western Australian nurse with over 30 years of skin in the game, in clinical, management, research and service development roles. I get fulfilment when working to elevate and advocate for the under-represented. I have successfully built services that are genuinely informed by the people who will use them. I understand the privilege of having education and knowledge, and the power that comes from being informed about choices.
Over 3 decades in cancer nursing, I have seen a lot of death and dying, and the reality is that not all of it has been good for the people involved. Assisted dying has been such a privileged space in which to work, enabling people to plan and take control at such a pivotal moment of their lives, often after years of feeling like the control was not theirs in their health care.
I believe that people should have the opportunity to be active participants in their health care decision-making, particularly at critical points in their lives. I strive to give voice and knowledge to consumers in the complex health care system
